Your agent can pay. That part is getting solved in public. The part still open is who governs the fleet once there are three agents, or three thousand.
The rail layer is getting built fast, and that is good. x402 works. AP2 is shipping. Coinbase and Turnkey hand out agent wallets with session caps. Payment rails assume authorization already happened by the time money moves. Nobody in that stack is building the layer that makes the decision.
Most diagrams still show one company wallet with AI attached: one treasury, one key, maybe limits on top. That picture holds until it does not. A payer agent should not share credentials with a trading agent. A customer billing vault should not sit in the same policy bucket as the master treasury. This is not a wallet problem. It is an org chart problem, and I have started calling it HR for money. Give an AI employee a role the way you would give a new hire one. A role gets a vault. The vault gets scoped credentials, a budget, an allowlist, and a human who can refuse a signature before money moves. Onboard the agent. Don't just deploy it.
Talk to people close to banks and institutions right now and you hear the same thing. Everyone is looking at agent payments. CFOs are asking about it in budget meetings. Nobody has pulled the trigger. Security stalls the deal on trust. Finance asks what happens when something breaks. Builders go from one demo wallet to ten and realize they are provisioning keys by hand with no deny tests and no evidence anyone can export. The rails are not what is holding this back. The missing trust and governance layer is.
If your stack diagram stops at agent wallet, x402, settlement, ask what happens at scale. Who provisions vault fifty-one? Who signs when the agent moves ten thousand dollars to an address that was not on yesterday's allowlist? The rail layer is being solved in public. The governability layer is not, and that is where I think the next durable company gets built: not another wallet, a control plane for the fleet.
